Jim Hermens, Chief Executive Officer

Jim Hermens, chief executive officer at Educate Online Inc., has more than 15 years of experience in education at leading companies that have shaped the online model worldwide. Hermens guides the vision, strategy, planning and operations for Educate Online Inc., the nation’s leading provider of online, individualized, outcomes-based instruction, serving more than 50,000 students via 1.4 million sessions in seven years.

Previously, Hermens served as vice president of product management and professional services at Spectrum K-12 School Solutions, a provider of enterprise software for special-population management for school districts. Earlier in his career, Hermens spent five years in leadership roles at Blackboard Inc., a provider of enterprise software applications geared toward the education industry. At Blackboard, he spearheaded the integration and growth of the company’s first major acquisitions in the higher education transaction processing industry. He was also responsible for overseeing the expansion of Blackboard’s hosting, consulting and training offerings worldwide.

In addition, Hermens served as a manager, director and vice president at Sylvan Learning Systems and as an early management team member of Sylvan International University, the predecessor to today’s Laureate International Universities.

Hermens holds a bachelor’s of arts from Princeton University and a master’s of business administration from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, where he was named a Shermet Scholar for outstanding academic achievement.

John McAuliffe, Chief Financial Officer

John McAuliffe joined Educate Online Inc. as chief financial officer in February 2008 to lead all financial functions of Educate Online. He has dedicated his career to guiding the fiscal growth and development of education industry companies.

Prior to Educate Online, McAuliffe was senior vice president and chief financial officer at Thomson Prometric, the world’s largest computer-based testing organization. During his tenure at Prometric, McAuliffe led the company’s significant growth in revenue and operating income as well as the consolidation of the organization’s finance functions, while reducing operating costs.

McAuliffe joined Prometric after the company’s acquisition of Capstar, a subsidiary of Education Testing Services, where he was chief operating officer. Prior to Capstar, McAuliffe was the president of General Physics Corporation, a training and consulting organization. He holds a bachelor’s of arts in accounting from Loyola College in Baltimore.

Brad Adams, Executive Vice President

Brad Adams, executive vice president of Educate Online Inc., is responsible for all day-to-day operations of the development, delivery and support of online, prescription-based tutoring across the United States via students’ homes, classrooms and partners.

A lead member of the team that prepared Educate Online Inc. for its launch as a private company in 2007, separating from Sylvan Learning, Adams served as the company’s executive director of technology operations with responsibility for getting technology to market. He oversaw large transformations of the business, including the development and delivery of the new Educate Online Inc. instructional platform, and grew the company from 15 people to 2,000.

Prior to Educate Online Inc., Adams was vice president of technology for Mindsurf Networks, with technical oversight for product definition, design and implementation. He also served in several positions of increasing responsibility at MCI’s Information Technology Division and in technical and operations positions with the Telecommunication Cooperative Network and Academy for Educational Development. Earlier in his career, Adams provided business and system consulting for mission-driven organizations such as Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Mott Foundation, World Wildlife Fund and Food Aid Management.

Adams holds a master’s in public and international affairs from the University of Pittsburgh, Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, and a bachelor’s of arts in history from the University of Pittsburgh.

Marc Corey, Vice President, Operations

Marc Corey, vice president of operations at Educate Online Inc., is responsible for the operations, support and delivery of more than 2,500 online tutoring sessions daily to students across the United States. Corey brings more than 20 years of experience in information systems and project management to this critical leadership position at the nation’s leading provider of online, individualized, outcomes-based instruction.

Prior to Educate Online, Corey led the delivery and implementation of enterprise-wide systems monitoring projects for Fannie Mae, managed a $20 million eCommerce implementation for FedEx Kinko’s, and supported various networking and software development efforts for MCI.

Corey holds a bachelor’s of science in computer and information science from the University of Maryland.

Alyce Menton, Vice President, Marketing

Alyce Menton, vice president of marketing at Educate Online Inc., brings more than 15 years of experience developing and leading successful, creative corporate and product marketing programs. In her current role, Menton is responsible for product marketing and marketing communications activities and for building brand awareness and a strong brand presence to students, parents and educators across the United States via direct and grassroots efforts.

Menton joined Educate Online Inc. after four years at WeatherBug, a top provider of weather information to individuals, schools and businesses, where she held increasingly responsible positions, culminating with vice president of marketing. In that leadership role, she led the company-wide marketing communications, events, public relations and product marketing teams.

Menton began her career leading marketing teams in the technology industry at industry leaders such as Network Solutions/VeriSign, Accrue Software Inc., and McAfee. She has a bachelor’s of arts in mass communications and marketing from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., Mount Vernon Campus.

Kristin M. Bannerman, Director of Government Relations

Kristin M. Bannerman brings more than a decade of experience in education policy and public service to her role as director of government relations at Educate Online Inc. She is responsible for building and strengthening the company’s relationships with government leaders and education policy makers on the state and national level.

Bannerman spent eight years of her career on Capitol Hill in the executive branch, serving as a deputy assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Education under Secretary Margaret Spellings and as an education policy advisor to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Educational and Early Childhood Development. In addition, she was a legislative assistant to both U.S. Senator Mike DeWine (R–Ohio) and U.S. Congressman Jay Dickey (R–Ark.).

Earlier in her career, Bannerman was a social worker in New York City and a teacher for America Corps elementary school teacher in Houston, Texas. She has a master’s in social work from New York University and a bachelor’s of arts from Emory University in Atlanta.

Maggie M. Hird, Executive Director of Human Resources

Maggie M. Hird has been with the Educate Online/Sylvan Learning companies for more than six years, currently serving as the director of human resources for Educate Online Inc. She is responsible for overseeing the education company’s employee recruitment, training, culture development, compensation and benefits.

Previously, Hird was a human resources manager at T. Rowe Price and vice president of human resources at both Federal Data Corporation and AMERICOM Inc. She holds a master’s of administrative science from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor’s of business from Western Illinois University.

Christopher Nguyen, Chief Information Officer

Christopher L. Nguyen joined Educate Online Inc. as chief information officer in July 2007. He is responsible for setting the vision for the company’s technology platform that delivers online tutoring to tens of thousands of students.

Nguyen brings more than 20 years of experience developing technologies for education to Educate Online Inc. Previously, he was president and chief executive officer at Caliber Learning Network Inc., an e-learning startup funded by MCI and Sylvan Learning Systems. Under Nguyen’s leadership, Caliber partnered with prestigious colleges and universities, including the Wharton School, Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University.

Prior to Caliber, Nguyen was the chief operating officer for Sylvan Prometric, a division of Sylvan Learning Systems, where he built a network of more than 2,000 computer-based testing centers in 100 countries.

He is also a board member of Questar Assessment Inc., a publicly traded company that provides assessment services to states under No Child Left Behind Act provisions. Nguyen has a bachelor’s of arts in biology from Johns Hopkins University.
